ABSTRACT

Healthcare delivery, especially in the public sector, involves implementation of various policies that guide operational activities meant to address health-related problems in society. Indeed, frontline health workers implementing public policy must understand public policy-making and how to manage policy implementation procedures effectively to forestall policy failure. This chapter aims to deepen healthcare management scholars’ and practitioners’ understanding of health policy procedures with regard to their day-to-day operations and to serve as a reference for them. Emphasis is placed on the following: policy articulation and healthcare delivery; characteristics of effective policy; ways of stating policy; compiling and communicating policy; advantages and disadvantages of procedures in healthcare management. And conclusions are drawn, based on the discussions. Most of the examples are cited from Ghana and other African countries.
