ABSTRACT

Role models are to be emulated. This chapter looks at the ASEAN regional community, a region that similarly to Africa comprises a diverse collection of developing and least-developed countries, as a potential role model for African integration. Lessons are to be drawn from the achievements of ASEAN in its regional integration initiatives over the last 50 years of its existence, including successes in trade integration, policy harmonization and establishing a unified voice in negotiations with third countries and regions. This chapter therefore focuses on how ASEAN has realized its successes, as well as what have been its stumbling blocks in its 50-year journey so far.
