ABSTRACT

Discussing two of my publications on attachment theory, Duschinsky, Van IJzendoorn, Foster, Reijman, and Lionetti (2018) raise three points ‘for sustaining a dialogue.’ I welcome any dialogue on the important issues we need to study regarding children’s development. I will address the three areas they cover: continuity in attachment theory over generations, the caregiving system, and the strange situation procedure. However, I focus on their main claim that I incorrectly ‘assume uncomplicated continuity from attachment research from the mid-1950s to the present.’
