ABSTRACT

This chapter takes up questions of intersectional identities of a Latina woman who teaches at a predominantly White institution, but in a canonical field, in particular British Romanticism. In particular, this essay uses the conceptualizations of WEB DuBois, Gloria Anzaldúa, and Gustavo Pérez-Firmat to think about the category of the threshold. Using the idea of the threshold, this essay discusses the concerns and challenges that seem, inherently, to create tension for a Latina faculty member in a predominantly White institution. There is no easy solution or resolution to these questions of identity, and rather than strive for a celebratory ending, this chapter offers up this personal experience at a site for further discussion and exploration.
