ABSTRACT

This poem can be considered the ars poetica that sums up the reason for creating the anthology. It explores subculture as a way of finding a space to express identity that isn’t accepted in clearly defined cultural circles. When one isn’t accepted completely in any racial sphere, nor is one accepted in any one country or cultural sphere, the only way to negotiate identity is to create a new space that incorporates aspects of each cultural/national/racial space and other unknown, yet-to-be-created aspects of identity. In my own experience, identifying with the punk subculture allowed me to explore all the different aspects of my identity and allowed me to face the painful exploration with a sense of humor, a sense of skepticism and, eventually, a sense of triumph.
