ABSTRACT

BIM is a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a building. Building information modelling (BIM) is proposed as an instrument for complex areas such as architectural design, plant engineering, structural, infrastructural, site management, facility management and project management, off-site machining, prefabrication, assembly, planned maintenance and even building restoration. The ultimate goal of BIM is therefore to be able to control and manage through a single information model all phases of a building’s life cycle, thus minimising the possibility of error between the various phases and between the transfer of skills between various actors in the building process. In order to be able to interact with organisations and users who do not have BIM skills, simplicity and clarity of communication are the cornerstones of a BIM project. The use of BIM on built heritage of various natures can also be useful in acquiring high-quality information related to the building.
