ABSTRACT

The concept of heritage is complex and difficult to define as a development factor from a wide point of view. Intangible cultural heritage is a complex heritage, which passes down knowledge and collective values and within which there are no restrictive definitions and instead often different cultural fields can overlap. Intangible Mediterranean heritage is part of the Mediterranean culture, placed at the same level of importance as tangible heritage, and not only from a cultural, economic and political point of view. In the context of the Mediterranean, the concept of heritage represents a particularly broad and strategic scenario to be used as a tool for local development. The contemporary cultural landscape of the Mediterranean area and its cities is of extraordinary cultural wealth, while paradoxically at the same time unjustifiable inequalities exist between populations on different Mediterranean shores.
