ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book demonstrates the entanglements between cultures of human embodiment, identity, ethnicity and social relations with digital technologies. It examines the affordances of the various digital technologies. The book highlights the sheer diversity of food cultures available on the internet and other digital media, from those celebrating unrestrained indulgence in food to those advocating for very specialised diets requiring intense commitment and focus. It shows that for Australian celebrity chef and lifestyle influencer Pete Evans, his personal experiences with adopting the paleo diet come together with his high public profile as an expert chef in his social media profile. The book describes bodies and affects; healthism and spirituality; expertise and influencers; spatialities and politics; and food futures. It addresses the use of digital technologies to promote food justice issues.
