ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the need to manage tourism businesses to ensure their efficient functioning and operation. For this reason, the chapter outlines the principles of management and their application to tourism businesses including the role of marketing as a management function. The chapter explains the role of management in establishing standards and systems of service provision, including human resource issues in managing people and in service delivery to create visitor experiences. The significance of small tourism businesses in the tourism sector are examined as these dominate the sector, and the role of innovation and tourism development as a management function is examined.
