ABSTRACT

The director of the DDes at the Harvard GSD, Martin Bechthold, discussed the individualized approaches to multi-scalar and multidisciplinary applied research geared toward contemporary practice. Researchers investigate topics through multi-method research guided by multidisciplinary committees. He compared the Harvard PhD in history and theory with the DDes, expanding on the DDes’s contributions to theories relevant to practice. Bechthold related the versatility of DDes graduates to their ability to become scholars, collaborate with industry in research and leadership roles, or practice. He was also invited to discuss his views on the future of technological and material research studies and innovation.
