ABSTRACT

As far as democratisation is concerned, Sudan and the rest of Africa are moving in opposite directions. Between 1985 and 1989, the trade union movement contributed much to democratic life, but now it is having to adapt - ironically - to one-party government. These days, traditional political parties and trade unions have to go into exile to work for the re-establishment of a pluralist democracy. Inside the country, the trade union movement is in ruins and fighting for its very survival.
