ABSTRACT

The slogan ‘No to the Eyadema dictatorship’ is regularly seen on placards at Togolese demonstrations; indeed, since 1991 it has become something of a commonplace. However, as little as six years ago, such a slogan was unimaginable or, at the very least, illegal. This turnaround reflects the large number of transformations that the country has undergone since late 1990. Democratic transition is taking place, but in a troubled period marked by divisions in the trade union movement.
