ABSTRACT

Six years on from the National Conference and the advent of an era of democratic revival, the leading players in the Beninese trade union movement are beginning to wonder: Since we have a government that invests itself with democratic and extravagantly liberal trappings, how can we bring into being a form of real democracy? Trade unions have succeeded in breaking free from State control, but they still have plenty to do. The road is long and littered with pitfalls.
