ABSTRACT

This study is an attempt to study the nexus between patriarchy and violence against women by discussing three interrelated aspects of patriarchy in Nepal: social norms, social structure and law. Research findings show how these three aspects – or the three heads of the hydra, to put it metaphorically – shape and reinforce each other rather than functioning as separate domains. For this reason, the three-headed hydra of patriarchy can be defeated only if efforts are made to cut off all three of its heads simultaneously.
