ABSTRACT

Agriculture is regularly highlighted as a sector of the economy with high risks of modern slavery. In this chapter, we look at the compliance and reporting quality of UK agricultural businesses under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act (2015) and compare developments over two reporting periods. We find that although technical compliance improved from one period to the next, the quality of statements did not. We see that most companies are taking a tactical response to the stipulations of the Modern Slavery Act and only a small group of agricultural businesses showed signs of a more integrated strategic response.
