ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the transformation of the Icelandic film industry is studied to increase the understanding of the interaction between digitalization and industrial transformation. More specifically, the chapter focuses on the composition, performance and recording of film music, and how these activities, and their relationship to the overall film making process, affect and are affected by digitalization and industrial transformation. Data has been collected through interviews with individuals working in the industry and through secondary data sources. Three conclusions are made based on the findings. First, when digital technologies support existing sets of activities and relations they are not transformed. Second, the Internet as a high-speed global communication medium has enabled the creation of international networks of craftspeople who base their craft on digital tools. Third, social networks that provide and diffuse access to knowledge and resources for experimentation are important determinants of how activities and relations change due to digitalization.
