ABSTRACT

Conventional interviews present challenges for researchers of young children due to cognitive and language limitations, among other factors. This chapter therefore explores using play-based interview techniques to ensure that research is more effective in gathering accurate data in accordance with the research aims. Guidance is offered regarding designing and tailoring the research tool to meet the needs of your specific project. A range of example interview activities are provided, including the use of modelling, construction toys, discussion activities, visual prompts, drama, technology, books and toys. The methodological framework suggested ensures that each interview may be tailored to the needs and preferences of the individual child, while also enabling consistency of data collection across the sample. Practical considerations, strengths and weaknesses of this method are highlighted, alongside recommendations for future use.
