ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book investigates the human use of automobiles. It discusses how automobiles attract our attention in multiple ways as culturally rich objects that are both utilitarian and aesthetically pleasing. The book explains how from humble beginnings the classic motorcycle movement in the United Kingdom has emerged to become the universally accepted standard setter for old bike preservationists. Experiencing heritage through tourism also entails more than just museums that interpret the past, show off technological advancements, or exhibit artifacts. The book describes how “sport-related heritage is increasingly being recognized as a potent instigator of tourism.” It explores what treatment models the management of historic vehicles should emulate as the interest in old automobiles expands. The book shows that the stewardship practices of sustaining historic automobiles and buildings appears to have similar objectives.
