ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to address the gap between preservation education pedagogy scholarship and the application of preservation practices on automobiles. Preservation education the world over prepares people for careers related to stewardship of the historic built environment. All graduates take their education and use it in their respective fields, widely expanding what they have learned to other activities. The professional acceptance of people educated in automotive industry, history, and preservation and the need for people in the field, could help the industry move toward the establishment of a solid academic background for the same. The historic automotive technology specialization at McPherson College is the offering most similar to the bachelor’s degree programs recognized by N.C.P.E. Historic motor vehicles do not have to remain solely as the stereotypical domain of mechanics and collectors with means.
