ABSTRACT

The chapter presents the results of three interviews with private sector experts in Latin America conducted in 2018. The interviewed experts show that BOP contexts are widespread and diverse in Latin America and the Caribbean. The interviews give a vivid overview of how different BOP settings can be in Latin America and the Caribbean and what the main challenges and opportunities are that critically reflect BOP 1.0 to BOP 3.0 strategies and current realities. In general, the BOP markets of Latin America and the Caribbean are structurally very informal and illustrated by market players with severe educational deficits. The main driver in the BOP context is the desire to improve the personal living situation of people in BOP markets through their inclusion in value-added processes and the associated higher income. In addition to innovations and market developments, access to information and knowledge via the Internet is powering the development of BOP markets. Cultural diversity is seen as a driver and obstacle.
