ABSTRACT

Art plays a central role in the world around the reader and how it shapes the people understanding of who they are, including their cultural identity and history, through designs and visual records, as well as informing the reader about world cultures. It is important to recognize and to be mindful as mentors that most beginning teachers have had limited time in initial teacher education to engage in the pedagogy of art and design, with some program having as little as three hours dedicated to the subject area. Therefore, the role of mentoring professional practice is particularly important to enable mentees to develop their art and design teaching, so pupils can learn within the subject. In this chapter, the author has been mindful that although mentors have strong coaching strategies, they may not always feel that they are the expert in the field of art and design.
