ABSTRACT

This chapter supports the people in mentoring beginning teachers by developing their understanding of what it means to teach reading. Reading is viewed as a holistic activity within this chapter, which draws on what is considered to be best practice for teaching reading. The teaching of reading in primary schools in England is often linked with raising national standards. It focuses on developing the people awareness of what it means to teach reading, and how to then develop the understanding of their mentee. The chapter provides extracts from case studies to illustrate how prompt statements on the teaching of reading can develop their mentee’s understanding. Therefore, the focus of attention for teaching reading often deals with the business of what needs to be done to improve, with perhaps too much attention given to methods and materials. The chapter has considered how to support the people themselves as a mentor.
