ABSTRACT

As discussed in Chapter 4, Psychoanalysis has traditionally focused on the regressive or conflicted aspects of symptomatology and transference. The Stress on work with the trailing edge resulted in a perspective and clinical approach which emphasizes pathology and defense. This chapter introduces the importance of working with the leading edge, in other words a person’s hopes and healthy progressive strivings towards growth. In this light, some initial clinical guidelines are offered. Leading edge theory is reviewed as well as ideas regarding how to successfully engage the leading edge yearnings of the patient which deepen the therapeutic relationship, and improve treatment outcomes. The chapter also demonstrates the ideas with a detailed and dramatic clinical example.
