ABSTRACT

The school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on Valentine’s Day 2018 and events that followed hold the potential to change America’s gun laws. In fact, while I write in July 2018, it already has. As I sat in my living room watching the news I was horrified, stunned, dumbfounded, and worst of all, not surprised. The Onion summed up the frustration felt when they released a satirical story that has circulated in social media titled, “‘No way to prevent this,’ says the only nation where this routinely happens.” Columbine occurred during my teacher preparation and thus left a mark on me, originally causing me to pursue law school alongside teaching. When I started working in schools as a student teacher, though, I knew that my life would be one in education and I have never felt unsafe in a school since.
