ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book considers the societal dynamics involved in climate disasters and their gendered ramifications. It is concerned with how international sustainable development planning agreements have been largely reluctant to incorporate gender into environmental protective strategies for developing more inclusive and sustainable climate strategies. The book discusses how social inequalities have consequences for the everyday lives of women and girls and how institutional and cultural practices make them disadvantaged in terms of disaster preparedness. It deals with the inadequacy of much research and policies on climate change to critically address gender as a conceptual tool for advancing our knowledge of adaptation, coping and mitigation strategies as related to disaster experiences and climate change. The book provides a multitude of rich descriptions and analyses of pre- and post-responses to climate disasters and their gendered ramifications.
