ABSTRACT
Israel thrives on its surface, with a productive economy and competitive democratic institutions. However, it wrestles with the open-ended Palestinian crisis, social and cultural change, regional threats from Iran, and political contestation that has produced increasingly polarizing governments in recent years. Steeped in history, the Israeli state’s capacity to adapt to its changing circumstances will shape its future arc of development and democracy.
