ABSTRACT

Immigration and the border have been key issues of Donald Trump’s campaign and presidency since day one. This chapter explores how immigration and border policy have evolved throughout the Trump administration, with an eye to understanding how these policy changes could impact U.S.–Latin American relations. It starts with a discussion of changing migration trends, focusing on how migration from Latin America has shifted from mainly Mexican economic migrants to refugees and families from Central America. It next reviews where U.S. policy has changed towards the border and immigration and where it has stayed the same. Finally, it explores the responses of Latin American governments and publics’ responses to the Trump administration’s policies and rhetoric on immigration, the border, and refugees, and the possible implications of future U.S.–Latin American relationships.
