ABSTRACT

The key objective of this chapter is to identify some of the more prominent trends in inter-American relations as we start the second half of President Donald Trump’s administration, serving as a first stepping stone for future research on the topic. The goal is to highlight the patterns that have so far emerged in the interaction between Latin American countries and the U.S., expecting that the evident changes in foreign policy styles on both sides will have lasting consequences for how hemispheric affairs are handled. The chapter also makes an effort to contextualize the current state of affairs within a longer history of inter-American relations, bringing forward the continuities that are also present, despite evident –though, oftentimes, superficial – disruptive actions and declarations.
