ABSTRACT

Islam is probably the Abrahamic religion that has more to say about animals. From the Islamic point of view, mankind has obligations and responsibilities toward animals because we have been entrusted by God to protect every form of life. Also, the Prophet Muhammad called repeatedly for an ethical treatment of other living creatures by mankind. First, this chapter will describe the Islamic approach to animal rights. Then, it will analyse how and why Islamists have focused on animal rights and animal-related issues. More specifically, the chapter will examine the perspectives of three groups: Hizb ut-Tahrir, Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.
