ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the evolving relationship between Angela Merkel and Donald Trump since the latter moved into the Oval Office in January 2017. It highlights both the more fundamental structural problems and the day-to-day political hurdles in German–American relations. The chapter also analyses the deeper reasons for the growing estrangement between the two governments which, after all, have been close allies and partners. Germany’s relationship with George W. Bush’s America was burdened by the legacy of the invasion of Iraq that was much opposed by the German public and the Gerhard Schroder government, though not by Angela Merkel herself. The German foreign policy establishment is scared of the possible disastrous consequences of Trump’s presidency regarding intra-western relations and global stability and peace. German–American relations remain crucial for the stability, security and well-being of Europe.
