ABSTRACT

There is a certain social comfort level acquired by engaging in traditional practices, in a manner accepted by those in power. Disabled researchers have always been present in the Academy. However, our acceptance remains tentative. Disability issues are rarely at the centre of funding agencies research agendas. Online funding applications are usually massive requiring hours of typing, and they frequently ‘time-out’ with no ‘saving’ option and limited possibility of uptake. In order to reconfigure the research landscape and be inclusive of disabled academic researchers. A full and forthright discussion and serious reflection must take place. The adoption of a modernised business model of the speed and time to completion has significantly changed the nature of research in the academy. In doing so disabled researchers remain for the most part chronic outsiders. Flexibility with speed, time and funding factors need to reflect the changing nature of both academic research and the researcher.
