ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the future role of the International Seabed Authority and the challenges that it faces, as the organization through which states parties shall organize, carries out and controls the activities in the area on behalf of mankind as a whole and provides for the equitable sharing of financial and other economic benefits. The importance of the present time requires the authority to be fully aware of the purpose for which it was created, and that it does not stop pursuing the dream that gave rise to it. The greatest challenge is to meet that objective in a manner that is adequate to the changes and developments taking place. The increasing versatility and dynamism of the authority has been demonstrated throughout its nearly 30 years of existence.
