ABSTRACT

India's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) spans 2,200,000 km which is largely unexplored and unutilised, and is the focus of much discussion in India. To understand the geographical extent of India's continental shelf, it is often useful to look at the Indian map upside down (south-up map orientation) to gauge how strong a maritime power India is. Seabed mining activities in India are currently confined to the CIOB. The EIS submitted to the ISA entails, at the beginning, a description of the project, its activities, scope, structure as well as credentials of the project proponent followed by a description of the policy, legal and administrative context of the project. The technical information was followed by a description of the existing physicochemical and biological environment at the location. One is the exploration of the deep seabed which is dealt with by MoES and ministries dealing with science and technology.
