ABSTRACT

One of Portugal's main interests was to pursue the discussion on the regulations for polymetallic sulphides, following the launch of the first scientific research programmes on the hydrothermal vents within the Portuguese continental shelf in the last decade of the 20th century. It aims to enhance the contribution of the ocean to the national economy and it is based on the increase of the scientific knowledge and the protection of marine ecosystems and their functions, which are considered as crucial vectors for the sustainable development of Portugal. After the initial desktop study issued in 2003 and following the Commission's recommendations, the Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf was established through RCM no. 9/2005 of 17 January 2005 with the main mission to prepare Portugal's submission in accordance with UNCLOS article 76.
