ABSTRACT

The operational situation at the end of March 1993 was that the Bosnian Government troops had gained some ground during the winter, taking advantage of their superiority in light infantry. Winter had ended, the Bosnian Serbs with their heavier equipment had started to advance and, among other things, the village of Srebrenica was increasingly threatened. The cease-fire was holding throughout most of Bosnia-Herzegovina despite sporadic violations, and the situation in Srebrenica had deteriorated. A working group will be established to decide the details of the demilitarization of Srebrenica. The situation forced the local Srebrenica authorities to agree to a settlement by which only the Muslim side was to disarm under the supervision of United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR). One of the greatest mistakes of the UN was not to support the UNPROFOR mission with media transmitters from the very beginning.
