ABSTRACT

The conflict in Bosnia erupted in 1992 and its development over subsequent years has been well documented. This chapter describes how the fragile peace in Central Bosnia was nurtured and developed and demonstrates how the warring factions were encouraged to work together in pursuit of a lasting settlement. It focuses on the crucial role played by the Joint Commission in encouraging the peace process and suggests that there are lessons that can be drawn from the experiences of the UN in Central Bosnia in 1994 for similar attempts at peace implementation and in the future. A Joint Commission was established in Gorni Vakuf with the military commanders of both factions represented. The main focus of the Sector and the main effort of the UN contingents was the third of the key mission components, the nurturing and development of the fragile peace between the Bosnian Muslims and Bosnian Croats.
