ABSTRACT

The Bihac crisis turned out to be one of the UN's early and most intense media crises, which ran at high intensity for about six weeks, in fact until Mr Jimmy Carter arrived quite unexpectedly and created the condition for a cease-fire. The UN information back-up system at that time for its media staff in Sarajevo was wholly unprepared for the intricate media war in Bosnia. The primary role of UN-led United Nations Protection Force was to create the conditions in which the parties to the conflict could negotiate their own peace. The mission was not well understood by the outside world and even when it was understood it was often abused for political purposes. UN media technology and resources in Sarajevo were inadequate, outdated and underfunded and was no match for what the media in Sarajevo had access to, or at their disposal.
