ABSTRACT

This chapter describes four assignments carried out by UN Military Observers (UNMOs) as follows: UNMOs as the eyes and ears of the UN; UNMOs as mediators between the warring parties; UNMOs as confidence builders for the local population; and UNMOs as actors against atrocities. These tasks are illustrated by practical examples showing how important it was that each and every UNMO tried to adjust quickly to a new and sometimes grotesque situation. UNMOs were often accommodated in private houses among the local population close to the different front-line areas. UNMOs were very mobile and thereby able to go into areas of tension on short notice. One of the major problems Abdic tried to solve right after the peace agreement was that of Bosanska Bojna, a small area in the northern part of the pocket where the Serb majority had been expelled at the beginning of the war.
