ABSTRACT

Forensic gait analysis is the analysis, comparison and evaluation of features of gait to assist the investigation of crime. Forensic gait analysis as currently most widely practised is based on observational gait analysis, in which features of gait are observed and noted. Forensic gait analysis has proved that it has genuine value in forensic casework, but its utility alone is a suitable platform for continued use and development. Professional practice in forensic gait analysis must be based on the use of “validated methods or procedures based on sound scientific principles and methodology”. Professional practice in forensic gait analysis is therefore developing in line with the expectations placed on all forensic disciplines. Criticism is still to be expected, and indeed welcomed as the basis for development and improvement. Quantitative means “relating to, measuring, or measured by the quantity of something rather than its quality”.
