ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author addresses particular examples of painting and sculpture, so that she interpretations should be regarded in the light of each individual work, it is necessary to caution the reader not to over-discriminate among the different strands of art. The visual construction of Empire in Canada, a construction made in terms of a patriotism that generated and reinforced an idea of nationality, informed the making of British art for India because it helped to invent the lineaments of duty for imperialism. The interrogations of art history are reconsidered, proposing a webbing of iconography intercolonially, between colonies, rather than between colony and imperial centre. Brevity aside, it was a glorious moment in the annals of warfare due to the unexpectedness of the British victory against a foe better equipped and with superior numbers. Home’s painting of the death of Moorhouse intentionally resembled West’s masterpiece.
