ABSTRACT

Rosa Luxemburg was on trial because she had addressed meetings, calling for actions against the mounting danger of an imperialist world war and urging the workers not to shoot at their class brothers in other countries. The women of the world represent a tremendous political force in the contemporary campaign for peace and social progress. The conclusion drawn by socialist-organized women from the tense world situation was to draw closer together on an international scale. Women’s Day in 1911 was to become the most powerful demonstration for women’s equality to be held thus far. An International Socialist Women’s Conference was held in Bern from 26 to 28 March 1915 on the initiative of Clara Zetkin and representatives of the Social Democratic Workers’ Party of Russia. The gulf between the longing for peace felt by millions of working people and the imperialist war policy pursued by the monopolies, Junkers and military leaders continued to widen.
