ABSTRACT

Schools have become very unsafe, and peer violence ranging from physical to psychological violence has become conspicuously visible in recent decades in many countries including India. Peer violence in the form of peer aggression and bullying is rampant in schools in India, and research points to its harmful effects on the well-being of students. Children and young adolescents spend a large portion of their time in school. The school environment therefore is a major influence in shaping students' physical, social and emotional well-being, while peers play a significant role in social development and learning. Government schools are barely able to provide basic infrastructure and most of them have shabbily maintained school buildings. Bullying is one of the most common expressions of school violence committed by peers. Schools should be happy, safe places for children to learn. School safety threats should be checked, as peer violence has serious consequences for children's health and academic performance.
