ABSTRACT

One dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality simulations have been carried out in order to determine the concentration levels of B.O.D., ammonia and dissolved oxygen in the tidal part of the River Axe, Weston-super-Mare. The work formed part of series of investigations carried out by Wessex Water Pic after a new outfall was proposed discharging fully treated effluent in the River Axe. The hydraulic simulations were carried out using the ONDA software which solve the open channel flow equations by applying the Preissmann box finite difference scheme. The water quality simulations were based on the STYX software which solves the one-dimensional advection-diffusion equation using an explicit implementation of the SMART algorithm of Gaskell and Lau, [5].
