ABSTRACT

This chapter exposes the major dynamics of what is now called the December Uprising, or ‘Revolution’. I focus on the main episodes of the Fall of al-Bashir in April 2019, and the main steps of the political transition formally initiated in August 2019. This chapter underscores the role of civilian actors in the uprising, especially the recent emergence of the Neighborhood Resistance Committees, whose role during and after the revolution has been significant. The chapter also briefly discusses the major challenges ahead, among which are the relation between the civilian and military branches of the transitional institutions, the restructuration of political economy, and the normalization of the diplomatic relation of Sudan abroad. Sudan started a new chapter since December 2018, and real reforms have been implemented by the transitional government. However, revolution is still to come.
