ABSTRACT

The Horn of Africa is one of the most fragile and vulnerable regions in Africa, if not in the whole world. All countries involved have had experience with some form of civil war, internal political turbulences, cross-border violence, weak institutions, economic decline, and subsequent waves of migration. Therefore, it is not surprising that the region has become one of the hot spots for migration in the eyes of the European Union and other relevant actors and organizations. However, due to both internal changes and international and global pressures, we can observe new trends in migration within the Horn of Africa. This chapter deals with some new trends in migration, taking into account multiple factors contributing to the changing nature of migration and mobility of people within the region as well as beyond.
