ABSTRACT

The Bus Rapid Corridor (BRT) Transolímpica was one of the key mobility infrastructure projects for the Olympic Games, which would connect nine neighbourhoods of Rio de Janeiro. This chapter aims to analyse the evidence on violations with regards to access to information in the context of BRT construction works and to examine the discourses on the sustainability of the Olympic Games in order to understand power asymmetries related to information and hegemonic sustainability discourses. It focuses on the symbolic part of dispossession, namely the marginalization of certain discourses and the construction of mainstream social-environmental discourses as part of the reproduction of power asymmetries and the preparation for capital accumulation. The chapter shows that the lack of information leads to lack of participation and to the restriction of other important human and social rights. It argues that access to information and communication are key issues in the social-environmental conflicts occurring in the case study area.
