ABSTRACT

Christiaens, Mears, Whitmore and Rhoades introduce us to the kind of environmental conflicts that are taking place in the current neoliberal era. Speaking of their actions as members of the activist groups CATAPA, The Gaia Foundation and the London Mining Network, they describe how new mining initiatives in Colombia have been met with local opposition among communities that take them as expropriation of land, water and livelihood. Christiaens et al. look at the rather complex knowledge framings with regards the value of nature that these local communities articulate, which contrast with the reductive market-based framings defended by the extractive industries.
