ABSTRACT

One of the major impediments to rapid development of the micro, small and medium enterprise sector in Ghana is the availability and access to finance. In Ghana, the problems in financing small firms have significantly inhibited the role they play in the overall macroeconomic performance of the economy. The National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan is an initiative of the government with the aim of providing an integrated national support for start-ups and small businesses. This chapter is motivated by the need to assess previous financing schemes to identify the nature of schemes, the target group/beneficiaries, challenges in implementing and managing the schemes as well as the funding bodies. The outcome is expected to drive institutions, implementation and management of future schemes. The chapter focuses on three major business funding companies including the Venture Capital Trust Fund, Ghana Angel Investor Network and Export Import Bank.
