ABSTRACT
This chapter is concerned with short-term diachronic change in Philippine English. It details the genesis of Phil-Brown and of an even more recent Philippine parallel to the American Before-Brown corpus. Phil-Brown was intended to closely resemble the Brown University Standard Corpus of Present-Day American English compiled by Henry Kucera and W. Nelson Francis in the 1960s at the Brown University. Motivated by these extensions to the nuclear Brown family, Borlongan undertook the compilation of his Philippine Before-Brown corpus in 2016. The Spanish-founded pontifical university has neatly archived works from before the war, though not in sufficient numbers to make possible a direct comparison with Phil-Brown and ICE-PH.
