ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the standardization of Philippine English (PhE) and the various aspects and dimensions of the unfolding of this process. It surveys the descriptive works done on PhE which are pivotal to the eventual standardization of the new English. The chapter discusses the issues surrounding the emergence and evolution of a standardized variety of PhE. It reports the status of the ongoing codification of Standard Philippine English. The chapter discusses prospects for an endonormative model for language teaching in the Philippines. It provides a conceptual model of the multi-faceted process of standardization of English in the Philippines. When nativization begins, Filipinos, and also Americans and other nationalities as well, come to realize that a localized English is emerging.
